The Boy With The U. S. Weather Men [2.9 MB]
Francis Rolt-Wheeler
The Book was published in 1917. Weather forecasting technology and practices have changed tremendously. Then why this book? The first reason is that the science behind weather is much the same. The reasons as to why it rains or why the weather gets hot or cold have remained the same. The second reason is more important. It is about the format of the book. The science is so well integrated with the adventures of the little boy that it makes very interesting reading. Finally, the discussion of the book will allow for a comparison of the old techniques with those of the present day. It will also allow for a discussion of the Meteorological Department and its functions.

Children and Balances [83KB]
Jos Elstgeest
This is a chapter from the UNESCO Source Book of Science in the Primary School. It establishes that balances are good learning aids in science education and therefore good teaching aids as well. They can be easily made, so children can work with them freely in the classroom. The children ask the balances; the balances provide the answers. The teacher helps in the asking as well as in the effort of finding an answer.
