Insult to Intelligence: The bureaucratic invasion of our classrooms [263 KB]
Frank Smith
Frank Smith distills twenty years of pioneering research and first hand work with teachers and students to launch a powerful attack on the widespread "drill and kill" approach to teaching that is deadening classrooms. Common sense says that drilling, testing, and grading have nothing to do with how babies, children and adults really learn. And research backs this up. But false theory, political pressures, business opportunism and harried administrators have persuaded many educators to accept this bureaucratic travesty of teaching as the real thing.

What’s wrong with the world? [145KB]
G. K. Chesterton
This is a book of (modern) social inquiry presenting many an “inconvenient ideal” and arguments that are powerful enough to make one take immediate notice of them. Chesterton has dealt with progress, imperialism, feminism and education in this book. In the fourth Chapter, “Education or the mistake about the child” he has in his characteristic way analysed public and elementary school education in London in the nineteenth century. Many of his views are relevant to this day to every discerning educator. Given the differences in social and historical context, one may disagree with the argument, but concede one must, that it does fuel a fresh line of questions about what we do in the name of education.
