Purplerumped Sunbird

Click on the thumbnails for more information.

Purplerumped Sunbird is a tiny bird, much smaller than the sparrow. The male and female birds look different. But they are always in pairs and can be found in gardens and wooded places with plants with nectar bearing flowers.

The female, not as glamorous as the male, is brown to olive brown above and yellow below. Its chin is greyish white. Unlike the Purple Sunbird, the male does not change its plumage during the breeding season. The lower parts of the bird are yellow like that of the female but the upper parts are spectacularly coloured with glistening metallic purple, crimson and green. Its metallic bluish purple rump gives it its name. Its wings are dark brown.
